I wrote this piece for YOU.
Today is THAT day.
The day you literally got up from the wrong side of the bed.
The day which included an argument with your friend or spouse.
If you’re really lucky, it occurred face to face. Ouch!
The day you’re stuck on the toilet with nothing more than a smidge of TP left on the roll with no backup.
Should you pull a Will Ferrell on Step Brothers? Or wait to be saved?
The day you spilled your hot coffee when you attempted to sit at your desk.
Combined with all your life stressors you have packed on, including a minimal amout of sleep the night before.
If I don’t get enough sleep watch out….can you feel me?
The day when you never seem to find the light at the end of your “Funk Tunnel”.
So you slowly begin to spiral.
Negativity has seeped into your mindset and your body language follows suit.
I have had plenty of days and more time spent in my personal Funk Tunnel over the past six months, while practicing social distancing from the pandemic.
We are all struggling.
Isolation from social distancing is a problem many people all over the world are experiencing. As it continues to take toll on your mental health.
You’re not alone.
During this time it is hard to change your mindset due to the feelings of overwhlem or knowing what to do.
This is where I share that words matter.
All words that we read from the moment we wake up to the very last second before we drift off to sleep matter.
Now, what if you were out in the community on a “Funk Day” and you read something inspiring?
You read a bumper sticker saying “You Matter.”
A yard sign that read “Don’t Give Up.”
Or a pin on someones shirt that says “You’re Enough.”
How would this make you feel?
Would it be the phrase that you needed to see that could potentailly change your mindset or even save you from the depths of your own mind?
Could it stop you just for one minute to refocus and stop hating on yourself?
I think it could.
Research says it does.
I have experienced it for myself and I bet some of you have too.
Thank you to whom ever placed a “Don’t Give Up” sign out in a field outside of Portland, Oregon. While driving past it, I thought about how many people it could impact.
I had the biggest smile on my face.
How many lives it could change?
That is POWER.
The Power of Words
In the Spring of 2017, a family from Newberg, Oregon decided to make yard signs with inspiring supportive messages in their community. They began with 20-yard signs with messages that included:
Don’t Give Up
Your mistakes Don’t Define You
You are worthy of Love
They created a non-invasive and anonymous way to support everyone in their surrounding communities because their local suicide rates knocked them out of their chairs. They wanted to help the problem and provide a solution and or support. They built a non profit organization that has spread worldwide. Their story is both exciting and inspiring. Please read their story on their website here.
This is a excellent example of taking action to promote change in the mental health community!
Help the movement by placing a sticker on your car.
Posting a sign on your front door of your home.
Purchase a yard sign.
Purchase clothing that displays postive messages on the chest or back.
